Currently under construction at the Disney California Adventure theme park, Cars Land today reached its highest point as a topping off party was held for the desert mountains of Radiator Springs.

The photo below shows a common tradition of placing an American flag at the peak of a construction project – and few construction projects are more elaborate than Disney’s.

Ultimately that mass of metal will resemble the Radiator Springs model shown off at 2009’s D23 Expo:

The scenic town of Radiator Springs is where the Disney/Pixar film Cars takes place and it is being constructed in real life by Walt Disney Imagineers. Due to open in 2012, Cars Land will feature new restaurants, shops, and several exciting attractions, including the E-ticket ride Radiator Springs Racers.

Back in June, Imagineers offered us a glimpse at what’s to come for Cars Land, including a preview of the Radiator Springs Racers attraction:

It’s all part of an ongoing $1 billion+ expansion/update of the theme park that sits opposite the original Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. Before Cars Land is complete, Disney will be opening a new dark ride based on The Little Mermaid in 2011.
