“Captain EO” is making its return to Epcot at Walt Disney World

It’s official, finally! Michael Jackson fans in Orlando can rejoice as Disney announced this morning that “Captain EO” is indeed returning to Epcot beginning July 2.

The 3-D film starring Michael Jackson first reopened as the “Captain EO Tribute” at Disneyland in February of this year and it was recently confirmed to be returning to Tokyo Disneyland on June 30 as well as Disneyland Paris on June 12. While Walt Disney World will be the last to re-receive the film that original premiered back in 1986, it’s better late than never.

While not specifically mentioned in the announcement, it’s assumed that “Captain EO” will take over for “Honey, I Shrunk the Audience” as it has done at Disneyland and will be doing at Disneyland Paris and Tokyo Disneyland (though the titles for that film are slightly different overseas).

How long will Captain EO remain at Epcot? According to Disney spokesperson Benjamin Thompson, “The duration of the Captain EO run has not been determined yet.” But it won’t be forever. Thompson also notes, “We plan to bring back ‘Honey, I Shunk the Audience’ at an undetermined date.”

Many fans believed that Epcot would not receive “Captain EO” due to the fact that Walt Disney World guests are comprised more of tourists than locals, whereas a large percentage of Disneyland visitors are from the area. But clearly the success of the film in California has prompted Disney to reopen it worldwide.

And besides, the film’s memorable lyric, “we’re going to change the world,” has a much bigger meaning when played at Epcot.
